Donations Flowing In To Support Houston Police Impacted By Hurricane Harvey

Houston, Texas – More than 100 Houston Police officers have completely lost their homes to Hurricane Harvey and 400 other police officers have been affected by flooding, according to the police union. These officers were out working to save other people while their homes were destroyed.

Donations have been coming in from across the country to help the police officers who were impacted by Hurricane Harvey, Fox News reported.

“I can’t say enough about the people who have come out and helped us. We’ve had people delivering food to our officers every single day,” said Douglas Griffith, vice president of the Houston Police Officers’ Union, in a Fox News story. “I can’t tell you how blessed we’ve been with all the donations.”

Donations have also been coming in to support the family of Sgt. Steve Perez, who drowned in his car Aug. 27 when he was driving to work and was trapped in flood waters. Sgt. Perez’s wife told him not to drive to work that day. But Perez told her, “We’ve got work to do,” according to Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo in the New York Daily News.

A local church down the street from the police station is holding donations for officers and allowing officers to take showers, according to Fox News. The church’s gym serves as a store for officers to shop and get items they need. Some officers are still in need of shirts and daily toiletries, according to the union’s Facebook page.

“We’ve been encouraging people to look after their neighbor. Jesus says help your neighbor,” Said Michael Dorn, senior pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church told Fox News. Dorn said people have driven 16 hours from Florida with a truck full of donations for the police and a van full of donations came from North Carolina.

Houston celebrities such as retired baseball star Jeff Bagwell and NBA superstar James Harden have stopped by the police union to meet officers.
