Donald Trump’s personal lawyer hopped on one of “the shows” on Sunday and said something monumentally stupid in defense of the President’s* son and it’s about to create a whole new world of trouble for Donald Trump Jr., Trump, and anyone else involved in colluding with Russia.
“Well, I wonder why the Secret Service, if this was nefarious, why the Secret Service allowed these people in. The president had Secret Service protection at that point, and that raised a question with me,” Jay Sekulow, a member of Trump’s legal team said on ABC’s “This Week.”

This suggestion that the Secret Service vetted Trump Jr.’s meeting with a “Russian government lawyer,” Jared Kushner, Paul Manafort, a former KGB counterintelligence officer, and others raised eyebrows all over the place — but none were raised higher than those of Secret Service spokesman Mason Brayman who says that the Secret Service absolutely did not vet the treason meeting.
“Donald Trump, Jr. was not a protectee of the USSS in June, 2016. Thus we would not have screened anyone he was meeting with at that time,” Brayman said in a statement, letting Trump’s son know that they are not willing to play along.
Former Homeland Security & Counterterrorism Advisor to President George W. Bush, Frances Townsend, blasted the claims on Twitter.
“Ok let’s try to deflect blame & throw those in
@SecretService who protect @POTUS @realDonaldTrump @FLOTUS & family under the bus,” she wrote, adding some emojis for emphasis.

Even if the Secret Service did vet the meeting, Reuters notes, ” its role in vetting people who meet with a U.S. president or candidates is limited to ensuring physical safety” rather than babysitting family members of presidential candidates who happen to be committing treason.
This attempt to throw the Secret Service under the bus is a new low for the Trump administration — and we can expect to see them continue to “go lower.”
